As WNC continues to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Helene and recent wildfires, many families are discovering that their most important legal documents - including wills - may have been lost or destroyed. 

In North Carolina, the original copy of a will is typically required for probate. If a will was destroyed in a natural disaster, you may still be able to probate it - but it's a complex legal process that requires experienced guidance.

Here's What You Need to Know

• NC Courts do allow for lost wills to be probated through established case law. 
• A detailed sworn statement, diligent search and proof of the will's contents are all required.
• If no copy exists, witnesses familiar with the will's contents may still help prove the testator's intent.
